The Nigeria LP Gas Association
(NLPGA) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have agreed to
collaborate together to curb illegal filling of gas cylinders in the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
NLPGA, the umbrella body of
all stakeholders in the LP Gas sector in Nigeria, said it is concerned by the
proliferation of skid tanks in the FCT especially those that do not conform
with the safety standards approved by the Department of Petroleum Resources
(DPR).
Speaking when he led
officials of the association to the office of the NSCDC FCT commandant,
president of the NLPGA, Dayo Adesina, said the association will be pleased
to see more enforcement activities particularly around the inappropriate use of
skid tanks.
He said there was need for
the collaboration and to have a safe environment now that government is trying
to get Nigerians to transit from kerosene to cooking gas with the launch of a
new gas policy that will see a lot more activities in the LPG (cooking gas)
sector.
"With that comes a lot
of the challenges that we forsee and this is why collaboration with all the law
enforcement and regulatory agencies is very important," Adesina said.
He said the association is
working very hard to ensure that cooking gas, which can also be used in
industries, power and agriculture, is more available to Nigerians.
In his response the FCT
NSCDC commandant Patrick Upkan promised to form a task force on LPG to
bring sanity to the city.
"We are prepared to
make sure that the right thing is done here in the FCT," Ukpan said.
The association has planned
a one-day sensitization workshop for officers of the corps to enlighten them on
activities of illegal operators.
